Chapter 4: Primary Hypersomnias

Prevalence

Kleine-Levin Syndrome is extremely rare — it probably affects less than in one in one million people.61

Kleine-Levin Syndrome primarily affects adolescent males with a mean onset of age 15.62  A longer course of Kleine-Levin Syndrome is often observed in women, and in patients who have had a smaller number of episodes during the first year.63

The severity, duration, and frequency of the Syndrome’s episodes lessen over time. The median duration of the syndrome is about 8 years (7 episodes of 10 days’ duration, recurring every 3.5 months), after which it usually disappears spontaneously.
