Chapter 6: Parasomnias

Assessment and Diagnosis

Assessment and diagnosis of recurrent isolated sleep paralysis

Similar clinical assessment as is required of all parasomnias. Most parasomnias are diagnosed by detailed patient history and interview. However, to rule out the presence of other sleep disorders, polysomnography (PSG) may be necessary. The evaluation is often videotaped for better documentation and assessment.1 Particular attention should be paid to rule out narcolepsy.1
