Chapter 7: Sleep-Related Movement Disorders

Assessment and Diagnosis of Sleep-Related Rhythmic Movement Disorder (RMD)

A diagnosis of Sleep-Related Rhythmic Movement Disorder (RMD) is established based on sleep disruption or sleep-related injury, and may be supplemented by video recording provided by the patient’s family. A diagnosis of Sleep-Related Rhythmic Movements (not SRMD) is made when the patient is not injured and sleep is not disturbed by the body movements.

Polysomnography is suggested only if a clear diagnosis cannot be made or if the movements are atypically violent.
